Adjust the focus tension adjustment collar on the microscope.Ā Refer to the instruction manual that was included with your microscope or download a replacement manual from the Support section of our website.
Confirm that the 100x objective is for oil immersion.Ā After focusing on sample with high dry objective (e.g., 40x) , place a drop of immersion oil to coverglass of slide before rotating the 100x objective into position.Ā A minor adjustment of the fine focus may be necessary to achieve optimal focus.
If the above doesn’t help, then check to see if oil has fouled the bottom lens element.Ā Clean the objective to remove any excess oil.Ā First, wipe excess oil from the objective using clean lens tissue.Ā Dampen another clean piece of lens tissue with glass or lens cleaning solution.Ā You may also use a lens cleaning wipe.Ā If the objective is still blurry, repeat these steps using rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol).
Make sure the power cord is plugged into the microscope and an outlet. If this didn’t help, then turn the power switch off then on again.Ā The fuse may be burned out and needs to be replaced.Ā Refer to the instruction manual for additional troubleshooting suggestions.
Although we set the focus travel limit during quality control inspections, you may need to adjust the stage travel stop limit to allow focusing closer to the sample.Ā Contact us at 631-864-1000 for guidance on how to do this.
You may be using an oil immersion objective.Ā Apply a drop of immersion oil to the sample before rotating the oil immersion objective into place.
The slide may be upside down.Ā Turn the slide over so the coverglass is toward the objective.
Adjust the focus tension on a gem or LED stand.Ā Hold both the left and right focus knobs, turn clockwise to increase the tension, counterclockwise to decrease the tension.
Hold the base of the stand with one hand, and slowly pull back the post holding the focus mount to the desired position.
Check to see that the LEDĀ wires are securely connected.Ā This may require opening a panel on the bottom of the microscope or removing the bottom plate from the microscope.
Replace the LED.Ā Consult the bulb replacement guide in the Support section of the website or contact us at 631-864-1000 for help in ordering the correct replacement LED.
Press the ECO mode button on the right side of the microscope base to turn light back on.Ā Check that the microscope power cord is plugged into the back of the microscope, and the other end into an electrical receptacle.Ā Confirm the power switch on the back of the microscope is in the On position.
Change the three AA 1300mAh 1.2v NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries located beneath the panel on the bottom of the microscope.
White balance the camera.Ā Refer to the Excelis HD Quick Start Guide for instructions.
Ensure that there is storage space on the SD card.Ā SD card cannot exceed 16GB in total capacity. The SD card may be in the “lock” position. If the yellow tab on the side is in the down position, push it up to unlock the SD card
Ensure the HDMI cable connection is secure on both the camera and monitor.
Ensure the Excelis camera is powered on.
Ensure you are either using the power splitter (Y-cable) and the splitter is plugged into the camera and monitor, or you are using a separate power adapter and it is connected to a power source and the monitor.
Press the power button on the monitor.

A compound or upright microscope provides a single optical path divided at the observation tube to give the same image to both the left and right eye. Compound microscopes are typically used to look at specimens under high magnification (40x ā 1000x or greater). Specimens are mounted onto glass microscope slides and typically include tissue sections, animal or plant cells, bacteria or single cell organisms, and bodily fluids (e.g., blood smears).
A stereo microscope ā also known as a zoom stereo or dissecting microscope ā features two independent optical paths, or axes, which are offset from one another. The two independent optical systems allow for depth perception and are responsible for the three-dimensional view that is the hallmark of a stereo microscope. Stereo microscopes are available with fixed magnification objectives (e.g., 1x and 3x, or 2x and 4x) or with continuous zoom optics (zoom stereo) thereby providing a range of magnifications (from 0.7x to 4.5x). With a longer space between the sample and the microscope, stereo microscopes are generally used to inspect electronic components, minerals, jewelry, coins, textiles, insects and to conduct animal dissections.
